Pushing the Right Buttons…

Majority of you may not know the name Bonnie Bailey but most likely you may have heard her songs. Her songs are considered house music but to me, it’s like John Mayer on Disco. I love John Mayer’s songs and it is what I would call "feel good" music. OK, my taste may still be in 2004, but you’d be surprised what I have packed in music. Anyways, the only thing that keeps me going these day is Bonnie Bailey and Benny Benassi. Songs (and remixes) like Ever After and Who’s Your Daddy actually carry me through my toxic weekday work. It ain’t easy and having no one else to really talk to at work, these two really bring my spirits up. I’m just thankful to the power of song and I’d like to thank these two. I guess they will never know how much they helped me out in my lowest of lows.

Thanks Both of Y’All…

Bennie Benassi:
-No Matter What You do
-Satisfaction
-Illusion

Bonnie Bailey:
-Rise
-Firefly
-Everywhere
-Kingdom of Pretty

Summer’s Here… Already…

Unfortunately, it’s quite sad to say but summer looks like it is coming real early this year. It’s already the end of February and I am already feeling the sting. The cold season came in a bit late and unbelievably, very short in my opinion. I leave home at around 7AM and basically, these is more frost under my breathe. It looks like there is going to be a long, long and not to mention hot summer. This is worrisome as I fear will be hitting 45C to 50C more frequently. Now the question is… Can you handle the heat? It’s going to be an oven sooner or later and I just hope I will be inside the office or somewhere else better. I hope I never feel sweat trickling down my neck after 5 minutes of going out.
Al Gore maybe right about a lot of things in his movie An Inconvenient Truth, but basically, t is a compilation of facts already stated out since the late 80s and early 90s. So much for the Kyoto Protocol and all this 3Rs. So many solutions that we can all come up with but for the heck of me, I just don’t know why it won’t happen. Its all about politics and money as usual. Why do you think water powered car still isn’t main stream. Why isn’t nuclear fuel more available? Why don’t the big countries make major steps to decrease their green house gases? 50 years, temperatures will increase, water may rise, and it saddens me a bit that my daughter will have to live through this. Just thinking about it makes me cringe.
Better start my crusade… Let me just put sun block first…

Terminal Illness…

The Manila International Airport Authority has come up with a massive upgrade plan. They plan to have terminals which will now be A380 compatible, better asphalt tarmacs, two kilometers in length of walkalators, a subway connecting the end of LRT2 to NAIA, a theme park and a cow dung cleaner. A cow dung cleaner?… Yes we need that because all of this is bull$hit. The Terminal Fee in the airport, now known as AUC is 750PhP from a previous 500PhP. Quite simple really, because of the stronger(?) economy and increase in expenses the MIAA has decided to take its costs directly from the Filipino traveler. There are exceptions made in this rule which serves as a right to passage for OFWs and religious activities, however, I do find it unfair that we need to charge so much just to use the terminals which could be mistaken as an old shopping mall. It saddens me really that the airport of my home country isn’t so "international." The people of my country are great and hospitable but the very first expression of a visitor in the Philippines would be the airport. I just hope and pray that the money our Non-OFWs pay will be put into good use.
I am a bit ignorant on the news about the Philippine airport but wasn’t there an issue before of some unused and unfinished terminals? The next thing I heard they were blaming the contractor while the other claims that the other party used it somewhere else. Charging extra should be justified…
Anyways, here is an except from the email I received last Thursday.

Dear Valued Trade Partner, Attached the new Manila airport departure tax (newly named AUC – Airport Users Charge) which replaces the previous departure tax of PHP 500.
All departing passenger (effective Feb 01/07) unless exempted as per enclosed circular will be levied PHP 750.

The Real Deal About Visa Extension According to Gulf News…

Being sensitive to the issues at hand when it comes to immigration details, Gulf News has once agin come up with an interesting article. I must commend them since they are teh only newspaper I read, they do seem to know what the public wants. After all, the news is to INFORM, not just something in where you want to read the miserable lives of others…

Securing a Visa to Enter Country

Dubai: An expatriate will need a visit visa to enter the country.
If the expatriate comes to the UAE on a visit visa, he/she can extend the visa without travelling outside the country by paying a fees to the Naturalisation and Residency Department which issued the visa.

Those who enter the UAE on visit visas and managed to land a job, they too can change their status without leaving the country.

But most people travel outside the country and then come back again on a work permit.

A visit visa to the UAE is valid for 60 days from the date of entry into the country. It can be extended before the end of the 60 days, for another month by paying a Dh500 fee.

Change of status

The visitor does not need to travel outside the country if he or she extends the visa before the end of the 60 days. A one-month extension will be granted. But if one completes the 60 days without renewing the visa, he or she should leave the country for one month.

Those who entered the country on a visit visa and wish to change it to a work permit have two options: either leave the country and come back on a new visa without paying any fees for the change, or they can pay Dh500 without leaving the country.

In Dubai, the change of status — from visit visa to employment visa — costs Dh1,100 which is  Dh600 more than what other emirates charge. This includes Dh500 which has to be paid for the change of  status, and another Dh500 because the person chose not to leave the country. An additional Dh100 is also charged as application fee.

If those whose visa is issued from Dubai prefers to leave the country for the change in the visa status, he or she will pay only Dh500 fees.

Those who enter the UAE on a tourist visa applied through hotels and tourist companies is valid only for 30 days. It cannot be extended or renewed.

All transactions should be done at the entry permit section at the Naturalisation and Residency Department at the emirate which issued the visa.

Documents needed for extending permits

Application form

Original entry permit

Original passport of the visitor

Dh500 extension fee to be paid by e-form (If the visitor prefers to leave the country and then re-enter again, he or she need not pay the fees).

Expatriates from some countries can get visit visa on arrival in the UAE, and can stay up to 30 days. According to a law passed on March 31, 2003, the citizens of  34 countries can only obtain a one-month non-renewable visit visa on arrival which costs Dh100.

However, those who entered the UAE through Dubai can extend the visa, while those who entered through any other emirate cannot extend it.

Penalties: If the holder of a tourist visa stays more than the 30 days allowed, there is a fine of Dh100 for each day as well as an additional Dh100 for an outpass.

If the holder of the visit visa stays more than 60 days or more than 90 days (after the extension) they will be liable to pay a fine of Dh100 per day, as well as an additional Dh100 for an outpass.

This article is more on how to extend your visa or what you should know about extending your visa, unfortunately, the title of the article clearly does not match the subject it is discussing. I’ve done my research about this and I have found out that people who purchase their visa from manpower or tourism and travel agencies are only allowed 60 days in the country. "Exiting" is mandatory. Besides, travel and tourism agencies lose out if you extend your stay since you pay 500Dhs which they don’t benefit from and lose out on having the visa you used, rented out to another person. In other words, you extend your stay, they lose about 800Dhs in revenue if they did not have your slot "rented" out to someone else. Now if your visa is from a company not engaged in visa selling, freezone of some sort or sponsorship from parents, you are entitled to this. Besides, some people say going to Kish is good because of the many misadventures you can do there, everyone lives in the concept of "What happens in Kish stays in Kish."

Whip It… Whip It Good…

Ever since I found my self back in Dubai, I had this urge of getting back in shape. NO, not the one that has me having ovesized biceps, a big puffy chest and a small head. I did not mean that one. What I would like is to be simply in better health, a smaller stomach with an ab-like presence, stronger arms and a strong back with a bulge behind my neck. Though it would seem impossible for you to imagine that this wimpy looking friend of yours is trying to do, I am slowly getting there. Actually, when I was a lot younger, I did have that ab-like appearance and a chest to boot. Of course, this was all thanks to the extra curricular activity of soccer, basketball and athletics. I do miss those days and though I did not have a gym to boot, I managed to get into the best shape of my life.
pUnfortunately, I am only getting my life back. After I left Angie and Issa back home, it gets lonely and I just try to move on day by day. It ain’t easy because I think about them everyday and of course, I would then relapse to my old addiction, the upgrade itch.
pI feel better now because I have done something better for my body then just sit in front of the computer after arriving from work. I still do it and I am trying to take it away but my dependency on it is slowly going away. So now, I try to jog every night from 10 to 11PM on a regular basis. My stomach is the root of all my troubles and I am targeting it slowly. I’ve been doing crunches and sit-ups for a month now and I did notice that it is getting smaller. However, it isn’t fast enough so I decided to jog a bit to get those fat reserves out. So far, after struggling to hit 2 laps on a 300m course, I’ve been able to do 5 laps after two days of constant jogging. I’ve never been happier for myself in a while and it feels good to be back there. I plan to take 3Km to 5Km laps within a month’s period and I know I can do it. As for  the other parts of my upper body, I think I am getting there. My vests now fit perfectly and Mr. Stomach is tucked in somewhere there. I guess I just need to keep on doing them push ups and lifting small weights. I know my arms would never puff into Popeye’sque proportions but I surely love the idea of pulling up surprises for people who judge me by my size. All I can say is:

" Drink Your Vitamins, Eat Your vegetables, Sleep Well and say no to Drugs… "
