CSR Syndrome…

As you all know, Etisalat is the only telecoms company here in Dubai and I was unfortunate enough to suffer downtime two days ago. Thus a blog could not be written nor could I do my work at home (yes… Homework). Well, my wife was happy because I would be able to sleep early and pay more attention to something not related to work, surfing or blogging. As for me, I was pretty irate about it because I could carry on with my work, my boss was in town as well, what a coincidence. Anyways, I was going crazy and I have done all that I could resetting the ADSL router and all. Well I decide to call the toll free number and have this thing sorted out after hearing rumors that my sister has not yet paid for the internet bill. (Which was true but was not the cause of the problem.)
Getting down to business we did the basic routine and spent around 20 minutes trying to sort this out. But nothing we did over the phone resolved this issue and he had to call reinforcement and worse of all it had to come 12 hours later. Feeling depressed, like my life line taken out, I just went to bed early (1:30AM… Lolz). Hoping that time will just take its toll and everything will be fixed.
Waking up and hoping, I tried again in vain. Before leaving work I was hoping that the technician would arrive but alas, nothing. I left home 9:30 and to my dismay, the technician called and asked me to try again. I called my wife and instructed her like a good customer service technician that I am and well, it worked and my wife did the work. It was great. The fact that the turn over for service was less than 24 hours is very good indeed. Kudos to Etisalat! As for me, I loved what happened, I missed the feeling of fulfillment, being able to direct people over the phone. The people from GS ADT know what this feeling is and I just want to remind my guys, though we work for the money the feeling we get when we over come the odds, help people who think lowly of CSRs, it just brings a smile to my face. Now, who da man!!??

ADT Peeps, I miss you guys!

"Jay was the first to help and gave me some excellent tune-up tips, which worked VERY well. As far as follow-up, I spoke with Melvin and he was the best. We finally came up with a solution for my problem and he was very informative and professional in his approach. Both are great and should be commended for their work. Thanks again for everything. I will definitely recommend you to all my computer friends. Sincerely, Robert Eller… A satisfied user."

"I debated for a week on signing up and paying the money. After doing so and working with your tech support agent, I feel it was money well spent. I am very pleased and will recommend Dr. Tech. Melvin was friendly, supportive, and guided me through each step; I was made to feel very comfortable. Thanks again!"

Feared or Respected…

Blogs don’t need to be always about the good things that one has done and I am definitely not writing because I feel good about something. I am actually blogging today to express my anger, frustration and guilt to what I have just done…
Today, I did what most people will say is barbaric but to me is the law. Out of frustration of not being able to keep my daughter quiet, she was shouting and squirming all out at home, I had to slap her to keep her quiet. I didn’t slap her once but three times. After all is said and done, she was even noisier than before. To make matters worse, her crying drowned her throat and she vomited over her shirt, onto our bed. But this does not compare to the feeling that I felt after doing that. My wife comes in, I myself feeling very displeased that my daughter still didn’t pipe down and I failing as a father. The words that parents say "this will hurt me more than you do" is very true.
I hate myself for doing this and it just goes to show how weak I am and how much I have failed as a father. I was raised in a (God and Parent)-fearing environment as well as the cane and the cycle continues. I feel horrible and words cannot express the guilt I feel. NAIINIS AKO SA SARILI KO!!!

To my daughter and my wife, should this blog survive the testament of time…

I’m sorry. I failed today, I hope I can be a better Dad for the both of you.

Goodbye 6670…

After a failed sale attempt at souq.com, and finding this weird Arab guy possess dual citizenship (Inindian kami nung loko), I was able to get it sold to another buyer. This Arab bugger offered me 650 Dhs to meet on Saturday 8PM and he never responded to my call when my wife, daughter and I waited for more than 30 minutes near the Karama Post Office. At least I was able to salvage the evening with the two ladies in my life.
I would like to extend my thanks to Eric and Hanilyn (hope I spelled it correct) for being able to sell the unit. I owe them one, don’t worry guys, my ice cream treat will stand. Burj Al Emlac for you couple.
I got my 600 AED, I now have the oportunity to start to getting my Piece-© (read as Piece - C) Project off the ground. The Piece-© Project is my 8 month mission in building my power rig, built piece by piece, acquiring each part a month at a time, topping it off on Gitex day. I will have a new section dedicated on it.

Worth Every Cent…

Well, it looks like my investments have finally paid off. I was on the bus last Thursday headed to pick up the cash I was telling you about (story below). I was minding my time, waiting to get off and listening into UltraElectroMagnetic Jam when two Indians aboard asked me about my headset. The i-Tech BlueBand is one of those devices I invested for the sole purpose of listening to music. O’course I explained to them what this device did and how fascinated were they when I showed them that there were no wires involved. Felt like a salesman and I must say I sold my product well. This darn thing cost me 300 Dhs and I had 4 reasons to get this headset:
i. Stop buying I-mate headsets which cost around 70 Dhs and because I break the wires every two months, I said I must put a stop to this.
ii. Listen to my music wirelessly while being able to speak during phone conversation. The Jabra 250v I bought seemed to have problems as people on the other end could hardly hear me at time.
iii. Connect to my PC (I’ve got 2 Bluetooth dongles) and have a wireless headset to use for games and music.
iv. Since I didn’t own an iPod, I was thinking this was the only WOW factor left of my I-Mate and blow those iPods and newer I-Mate and Nokia models out of the water. According to what I have heard, Apple are already making a Wireless BT iPods very soon. Anyways, not everyone can get this wireless thing done right now, there is compatibility involved and my I-Mate Jam and BlueBand are the right fit.
Well, it looks like purpose No. 4 has been achieved and I can just feel the my head getting a bit bigger.

An Idoit’s Guide Going to Dubai

This document is subject to change. Last UPDATED Dec 10, 2007.

Basically before you can get here you will need to have authenticated documents. As far as I know the rules have changed again but I prefer to follow the straight line.

You will need the following:

1. Birth Certificate
2. Diploma and TOR
3. Marriage contract (if married)
4. Technical Certificates (Optional)

The Birth Certificate and Marriage Certificate will need to be authenticated from the NSO.

The Diploma and TOR needs to be authenticated by your school and CHED.

I am uncertain about your technical documents but those need to be authenticated by TESDA. Most of the time this is not necessary but if you want to, you can ask where you can get that authenticated.

Once you have all of these documents authenticated by the proper bodies, you will them proceed to Malacanyang to have it attested. It will take you a maximum of 5 days to get that done and may cost you around 200 PhP all in all for the documents. It is just a stamp/seal. After you are through with this, you will proceed with the Department of Foreign Affairs to have them authenticated and I think the cost is around 50 PhP per document and will take around 2 weeks to get back. The line is very long there so I suggest you go there early.

Finally, the last thing to get in your way is the UAE Embassy located in Makati. This is the longest process as you will need at least 3 weeks to 1 1/2 month to get a reply. You will need to go to the LBC or FedEx office and get an application form to be sent to the UAE embassy (Philippines); in there you will insert your documents and will require a manager’s check amounting to 850PhP per document. You can submit only your diploma and marriage certificate is a must. If you know some one inside you can get it done quicker of course, but this is an under the table thing and definitely will cost more. You can actually head to Dubai and have that processed while you look for a job but better to have documents than none at all.

Once this is done, you are basically ready to go to Dubai. The only things you require are:

1. Visit Visa
2. Plane Ticket

I will be talking in Dirham (UAE currency, multiply by 11.3 to convert) now. A Visit Visa will cost around 900 Dhs and is good for two months. Should you not find a job in 2 months, you are required to "Exit" meaning you need to get out of the U.A.E. and get another visit visa issued. YOu must plan this 3 days before your actual last day, you will be fined 100 Dhs per excess day which you will have to pay before your exit. Since it would be more expensive to go back to the Phils and come back, people take the shortest route going to Kish Island (Iran) or Muscat (Oman). Trips to Kish Island with a new visit visa will cost you around 1250 Dhs - 1400 Dhs. You can never tell but most of the people here have been to Kish because sometimes the employers don’t give employment visa and just let the employee exit every two months, of course they will pay for the visa and trip (hopefully). Sometimes, transfer of visit visa to employment visa also requires a trip.

The next thing you need is plane ticket. You can canvass in the Phils but everyone usually flies through Cathay Pacific. Airlines that fly here are Thai Airways, Royal Brunei, Kuwait Airways, Emirates, Qatar Airlines and Philippine Airlines (through Emirates). The most expensive one is Emirates and all the agencies require you to buy a return ticket to the Philippines. Usually tell your travel reservation agent of your purpose to Dubai as they can issue an OPEN Return trip since you don’t know when you want to go home but the ticket life is around 6 months. If you do get a job you can get the ticket refunded, I am not certain if it can be done from here but usually they get he refund amount in the Phils. Cathay Pacific is the most feasible one as a lot of people travel through it. You can also choose Royal Brunei; it is the airlines usually taken in by Domestic Helpers. Ticket cost will vary and let us just say it will cost around 2600 Dhs for the ticket. If you are not interested in paying for a full trip, there is always a "Dummy Return" system where travel agents will book a full trip but you are actually paying for a one way (Manila - Dubai) trip and the return is actually a dummy which you will not be able to use. It costs less and is actually a better option, however, when there are big issues requiring you to go back home, you better have some bulk amount ready for your trip back.

Upon arrival, you will also need to think of the matter about getting accommodation. There are rooms available in Dubai but will cost you a minimum of 1500 Dhs for 2 people. It will have no bed or facilities. You will need your own stuff. There are also bed spaces or boarders where you share your room with other people. You can get them for a cost of around 400 Dhs, water and electricity not included. There are basic things available like TV, bed and cabinet, if you are lucky there is washing machine facilities, if not, you end up having an Indian guy wash and iron your clothes with other who-knows where they get the clothes from. AS for food, you will also be lucky if they have cooking facilities, other than that you can eat in a restaurant or there are these roving women selling Filipino food for 5Dhs only.

All in all, you need a minimum of around 150,000 Php to live comfortably in 4 months.

Watermark, Avatars and a Day full of money…

Today, I’ll be putting in some watermarks in my pictures. Watermarks are basically, recognizable pictures in a document. So those cartoon characters you see in them pictures, that will be my watermark basing my expression or what other people were actually feeling. I wanna become more interactive … I would like to thank Dervin and his website. I got the icon idea from him. I would like to note that these expression or avatars come from http://www.dracoy.com/delete/avatars.swf

Anyways today, I held in my hand around 22650 AED (this is around 323895 PhP) of our company’s money which we will reward our loyal customers. Scared like silly since our clerk gave the money to me out in the street. Our company needed it to be changed into Carrefour gift vouchers. Lucky travel agents. Anyways, just took a picture of the amount since I could never hold this type of amount in one time. O’course I did one time hold around 120000 AED to transfer it in my father’s account. I get paranoid when I hold something more than 10000 AED. :)

So I go to Carrefour and tried to give the cash. They said I had to wait like 30 minutes. So it took some time and I still carried the money inside the grocery, trying to be careful not to get my pockets picked. Anyways, after I got home I just wanted to put it in a safe place, this thing is still considered money, so until I get this out… I’d feel really uncomfortable. So here is a shot and drool over 22650 AED worth of Carrefour vouchers.

Why Gary, Lord?

Today was just a regular day when I sudden heard some disturbing news. Alain, one of my ADT boys, just informed me about our good friend… I recalled the Yahoo Chat…

alaind0g (1/17/2006 3:33:32 PM): actually this just came in
alaind0g (1/17/2006 3:33:36 PM): do you know gary?
alaind0g (1/17/2006 3:33:50 PM): gary bajada? yun kasabay ko sa adt?
Mak (1/17/2006 3:34:14 PM): yah…
Mak (1/17/2006 3:34:16 PM): why?

I thought Alain would say "He’s back in Globalstride!" and I’d be all happy and all but then this came in…

alaind0g (1/17/2006 3:34:23 PM): is past away
Mak (1/17/2006 3:34:42 PM): what?
Mak (1/17/2006 3:34:50 PM): Are you serious?
alaind0g (1/17/2006 3:34:52 PM): has past away
alaind0g (1/17/2006 3:34:54 PM): yeah
alaind0g (1/17/2006 3:35:00 PM): earlier this morning

And I just could not believe it. Gary Bajada, one of our colleagues in Globalstride has passed away. I CANNOT BELIEVE IT! Why Gary Lord? Why? I believe in Your plan and I know You have everything in his and Your best interest.
Just to let you know that Gary was planning to go to Dubai and I was going to help him succeed in making his dreams come true. Gary my wife and I will sorely miss you and I appreciate the companionship you have provided for me and for the team. It hurts me to accept this reality.
I need not list Gary’s best qualities of being God-fearing, honest, reliable, soft spoken, and hardworking. The list goes on… My condolences to the Bajada family, you lost a great son, family member and friend! God Bless Garski…

I’m Back and I’m Serious About It…

Well after a 4 month silence, I’m back to get the Jam Cam Blog up. Getting back to the blog was because of this guy…D.E.Correa and yes I did get envious of his Blogspot.com section. So I wanted my own Blogspot but I get lazy with the design and all.
My anniversary gift for my wife, love and mate. Its the infamous N90, love it  or hate it, my wife just had to get her hands on these. Ofcourse, it didn’t come cheap, my phone didn’t either but I am proud of my Imate Jam. This is where the Jam Cam comes from. There is a unit beside it which was my wife’s old phone, the 6670. I never liked it but it has now become property of yours truly. Now, I’ve got to find someone who’d be interested in buy it for my future PS3 investment.
Phone is pretty sophistiocated and looks really good. I find no use of having a second phone but if I had one, it be an N70, K750i or this one…
